When to get a learner tested
Dyslexia can show up differently for every kid, but there are a few signs that tell you you should talk to someone about getting your learner tested. First of all testing can be an investment private testing can generally cost anywhere from $400 to $5000 . That is why its importune to talk to some one first.
Why is testing importune? For child who is showing signs of dyslexia it’s important to figure it out so that they can receive the accommodations and support they need. A child not being tested early enough can result in low self-esteem and can fall behind. Studies even show that dyslexic reader who do not get get the help they need have a lower high school graduation rate. By getting tested earlier then later a child can get what they need to succeed. Many students with dyslexia who were tested early on report it is less of a struggle because they were able to get the help they needed at a younger age. Though it is better to be tested late then never.
What are some signs of dyslexia?
For young kids around preschool age they may have trouble with things such as recognizing rhyming patterns, mispronouncing familiar words, and learning/remembering the names of letters of the alphabet.
For Children in kindergarten and 1st grade they may not be able to sound out simple words, they have a hard time connecting letters to there sound and understanding that words come part, and make error in there reading by guessing from the image instead of reading the word. A child with dyslexia may continuously complain how how difficult reading is and avoid reading.
For older children they may avoid reading out loud, have trouble reading unfamiliar words, have poor spelling and messy handwritting and may find finish finishing tests on time difficult.
Often children with dyslexia have a hard time rapidly naming things. This is so quickly and automatically a person can name a series of familiar symbols like letters, numbers, colors, or objects on a page. Dyslexic children will have a super challenging time with reading fake made up words. They will also have trouble decoding and they may skip over small words such as “the” and the word “and”.
A common thing dyslexic children will do it trying to fake knowing how to read by carrying around or pretending to read a large book that is way above there reading level.
Adults with dyslexia may have low self esteem “believing themself to be dumb” they may avoid reading out loud or for pleasure.
Remember Dyslexia is genetic so if someone in the family has it is possible the another may as well.
